Edinburgh City Levy
What is the Visitor Levy?The Edinburgh Visitor Levy is a local charge of 5% on paid overnight accommodation, introduced by the City of Edinburgh Council. It helps support the city’s infrastructure, heritage, and cultural offerings for visitors and locals alike.
When does it apply?The levy applies to all bookings made on or after 1 October 2025 for stays taking place on or after 24 July 2026.
How much is the levy?The levy is 5% of your accommodation cost, applied only to the first 5 consecutive nights of your stay.
Does the levy apply to everyone?Yes, it applies to all guests, whether local, national, or international.However, certain exemptions may apply (see below).
Are there any exemptions?Yes. Exemptions include:
- People experiencing homelessness or staying in temporary accommodation provided by a local authority.
- Certain people receiving disability-related benefits.
- Guests staying for charitable/emergency reasons.
- You will need to pay upfront and apply to the City of Edinburgh Council for a refund if eligible.
Does the levy apply to everything I book?No. The levy is applied only to the accommodation portion of your booking. It does not apply to:
- Food and drinks
- Parking fees
- Room upgrades or packages including extras
Will the levy be included in my total price?Yes, our booking engine will display rates inclusive of the levy if it applies to your stay. The levy will be shown clearly on your booking confirmation and final invoice.
When do I pay the levy?
- If you book a prepaid (non-refundable) rate, the levy will be charged at time of booking.
- If you book a flexible rate, the levy will be included in the rate and charged 48 hours prior to arrival.
