The History of Mother’s Day

USA
Mother’s Day has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. The modern celebration of the holiday, however, has its origins in the United States in the early 20th century. The idea was popularised by Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for a national day to honour mothers after her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, passed away in 1905. Ann had been an advocate for peace and had organised Mother’s Day Work Clubs to improve sanitary conditions and reduce infant mortality. Anna’s efforts led to the first official Mother’s Day celebration in 1908 in West Virginia, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as a national holiday dedicated to mothers. Over time, Mother’s Day became a global celebration, though customs and traditions vary across countries. It is now widely observed with cards, flowers, and family gatherings as a way to express love and appreciation for mothers.

Europe
Mother’s Day in Europe has a somewhat different origin compared to its American counterpart. In many European countries, the tradition of honouring mothers can be traced back to the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday,” which was observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Originally, it was a religious occasion when people would return to their “mother church” for a special service, symbolising a return to their roots. Over time, the holiday evolved into a more familial celebration, where children would give gifts and cards to their mothers. In the 20th century, inspired by the American Mother’s Day movement, several European countries began to adopt a similar version of the holiday. The UK officially recognised Mother’s Day in the early 20th century, and it became widely celebrated across the continent after World War II. Today, many European countries observe Mother’s Day on the same day as in the United States, the second Sunday in May, though some countries still maintain their traditional dates.
